Open Doors volunteers served more than 220 people on Saturday morning, Dec 5.
Participants not only enjoyed the pancakes and fruit, but had time to socialize while groups of engineers, their families and friends learned about hydro safety, home fire safety, and interacted with police constables who offered safety tips for home and business.
Fantastic electricity demonstrations included cooking a pickle and models of hydro wires were offered by Burlington Hydro throughout the morning. Kids put out ‘fires’ on a stove top , climbed in the police cruiser and talked with the Halton officers, then had a chance to
talk with fire fighters and see what is inside all the doors on a pumper truck.
Back inside the wait for face painting was shortened by music by the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Brass Band Quintet in addition to smooth musical entertainment from Denise Fex. Even Mr. McGruff joined the fun. Feedback was spontaneous and very positive from all participants – and as a bonus, Open Doors received donations in excess of $1000 and many unwrapped toys.
Special thanks to all who volunteered to make the Breakfast as success, including Mastermind Toys on Brant Street for great door prize, Canadian Tire on Fairview Street for valuable discount cards, and Halton Police door prizes. Hope to see everyone again next year!
Watch for our next Family-oriented event – a Summer BBQ.
